Mi Roborock S5 Max Vacuum Robot

Xiaomi is a bit like Huawei, a giant Chinese company that wants to go out to the world. If we forget all the prejudices and look at the products, then they are actually not bad.

That I will also show in this rather comprehensive review of a Xiaomi Roborock S5 Max robotic vacuum cleaner, which proves superior in several areas. Read on to get to know this new tech giant.

The very basic, namely the box and the contents.

The box in which you receive your vacuum cleaner is actually quite discreet. It is white with text and pictures on the outside. As you can see, you can buy this vacuum cleaner in either white or black.

Inside the box, it is all packed very nicely and securely packed into several layers of cardboard. Everything is thought of, and at the very top, we find a protector for the floor. This vacuum cleaner can also mop the floor, so there can be wet under it, which the floor protector protects the floor from.

In the box, we also find the power cord and user guide for the vacuum cleaner itself, and a guide on how to connect to the vacuum cleaner with the app for the network.

A further look at the accessories.

Of accessories, we find a docking station where the vacuum cleaner can charge. It connects directly to an outlet without an adapter. Behind the dark glass, there should be some infrared transmitters that allow the vacuum cleaner to find it and run directly to it.

Under the dock, there are some good non-slip feet, and a double-sided tape, so you can stick the protector firmly on it, or stick the dock directly to the floor so it stays. The protector has additional adhesive underneath, so it is secured against the floor.

In the box, we also find the mob. You put it under the vacuum cleaner when it has to mop the floor.

On the mop, there is a microfiber cloth that is attached to the underside.

The cloth is, of course, Velcro, and it is easily removed by pulling it off the Velcro and sliding it to the side. Of course, you can buy extra so you don't have to wash the mops all the time.

The technical specifications.

Here are the specifications compared to the other similar models which have roughly the same features.

The dust container has become slightly smaller, but the water tank has become larger. It has been given intelligent control of the water to the mop so that it can now determine how much water is being fed all the time. Battery and suction capacity is the same and you can change the brush itself, which we will see in a bit. Besides that, there are dots on all functions.

Now it's time for a look at the vacuum cleaner.

The S5 Max is similar to the other Roborock vacuum cleaners. It is round with the small tower on top. The small tower is the laser scanner, which scans the room while the vacuum cleaner is running.

If you open the vacuum cleaner, you will find the dust container, or 'bag' as anyone would call it. It is easily removed and emptied.

The container itself has a filter which can also be changed. In fact, all consumables can be changed in this vacuum cleaner and purchased as a spare. The container is opened very easily by the filter, so you can empty it. The filter can be removed and vacuumed with a normal vacuum cleaner. (Yes, you do not get rid of the normal vacuum cleaner even if you have a vacuum cleaner robot).

The S5 Max focuses a bit more on the mopping as it has a larger water tank than the other vacuum cleaners. This can be removed, filled and rinsed. It is recommended to use only clean water in the tank, and if it is to last a little longer, I think demineralised water as it contains less calcium. There are some small breath holes that can get calcified over time.

When the mob is mounted, the vacuum cleaner goes all the way down to the floor. The vacuum cleaner detects whether you have put the mop on, and then activates the mopping function automatically. The vacuum cleaner can easily run around with the water tank without the mob, that's no problem. And I have not seen any spill of water, even at doorsteps.

Of course, there is also an edge brush, which can take stuff along the edges, and slightly into the corners. It is made of rubber unlike previous models and competitors, which typically have an edge brush with hair. This also works quite well. I don't know if Roborock has found that hairs can get stuck under various lists or why they have changed to rubber.

You can also see the vacuum cleaner's "eyes" with which it uses to find the dock, and see edges and various obstacles.

If we take a look under the vacuum cleaner, we can see the main brush itself. Outside along the edge of the front there are also sensors that look down. It is to avoid falling over edges, like down the stairs. These sensors can cause some problems in the case of black / dark floors, as the vacuum cleaner then thinks there is a hole down, even if there is not.

The vacuum cleaner has some powerful wheels that are rough in pattern. This allows the vacuum cleaner to go over edges and carpets without any problems. I'll show that a little later.

Of course, the brush can be easily removed and replaced when needed. But the vacuum cleaner tells you everything, as it has complete control over how much each part has been used and when it is time for service.

There is no need for tools to clean anything on the vacuum cleaner, but needed when replacing some of the spare parts.

The Mi Home app.

You can use two different apps for the vacuum cleaner, namely Roborock and Mi Home. I have chosen this review to include information about the Mi Home app, as it is a Smart Home app that can control many other things and not just the vacuum cleaner.

Once the app and vacuum cleaner is installed, you can tap on the vacuum cleaner and the first image you encounter is this. Here you can start cleaning or you can put it to charge. If it has been out vacuuming and something has happened, you can send it back to the dock.

The first picture you encounter will be this picture, even without the numbers above, which is my last run with the vacuum cleaner. The app will be completely blank.

Usually, the app and vacuum cleaner does not store the map over the house but make a new card each time it vacuums. There can be advantages and disadvantages to this. If you do not need to divide rooms and make different settings for each room, then you can just run with the default setup. If, on the other hand, you want to be a little more technical, then you have to activate the beta function in the app.

Once the Beta feature is activated, you get a lot of extra stuff you can adjust. Now it starts to look like a smart home product.

Among other things, you can divide the whole map into different rooms, where you can name them. You can give each room a setting for how much the vacuum cleaner should suck and how much water the mop should have. And then you can edit every room with no-mobbing zones, put invisible walls and several other things. You can make the whole experience much better.

It is still in BETA, which you have to remember, so there may be small errors and shortcomings you discover over time. But they have actually come a long way with the app.

Of course, the vacuum cleaner has a lot of other options that you can use. It is possible to set timers so that you can get the house cleaned at regular intervals or on fixed days and times. It is possible to drive around with the vacuum cleaner and play with it, or you can point on the map and ask it to go wherever you want it to.

It is also possible to see when it is time to change and buy spare parts home. This way, you can always make sure your vacuum cleaner is up to date and ready to do the job properly. The intervals certainly do not seem unreasonable either.

Should we go for a ride with the vacuum cleaner?

Of course, I have tested the vacuum cleaner a lot over the last week and it has been running the home thin.

The first time you drive the vacuum cleaner, it must map the home. Of course, it vacuums at the same time and slowly one's home appears. You find out where it can go and where it can not. Sometimes you may need to set up a virtual wall so that it does not run over high steps or where there is a little step down. Among other things, we have two steps to the utility room and bathroom, which are too high for it to come back if it comes out there. So I put a virtual wall there, but as you can see, it has looked through the door, and has already started mapping the two rooms.

The first time the vacuum cleaner is running, it's a little messy how it does it, not random, but messy. Next time you run the vacuum cleaner and it knows your space. Then it is quite nice and structured as you can see in the picture on the right. Exactly, there is full tracking on where it is running, and it records it every time it is vacuuming. It also stores every vacuum so you know exactly where it has been.

Many people ask about door steps and we have door steps that are about 3 cm in height. They are all divided into 2 steps and it crawls over them effortlessly as long as the mop is not mounted. Once the mop is mounted, it struggles a bit more to get over, but I haven't experienced it not being successful yet.

I've seen it hanging on top of the door step once or twice. But astonishingly enough, it discovers that it is hanging still, and then begins to wiggle from side to side until the wheels catch again. I don't know exactly how they do it, but it works amazingly well.

There is no doubt that the vacuum cleaner sucks up something, we have a cat, and even though I had vacuumed a few days before, it still found a lot of dust and hair on the floor. So I think it's really good for someone in any allergy home. Then the rest of the dust also settles while you are out of the house, so there is calm in the air when you get home.

The mopping feature actually works really well too. It cannot replace thorough cleaning unless you have no furniture or anything in the rooms. But it may help that it should not be done that often. I took a walk in the hallway with it and it is clearly seen that it takes something. If it is to be thorough cleaning with the mopping function, then it must run over several times, and probably at the highest water consumption.

Speaking of water consumption, the surface only gets moist when driving with the mop, not wet. A lot of water is used when running over larger areas, and the water tank was also empty after mopping and vacuuming the entire home of about 60 square meters.

What is my assessment of Roborock S5 Max.

If you look at various tests on YouTube, I have been lucky in this choice. This vacuum cleaner is so structured that it looks completely professional. I love that you can follow the vacuum cleaner directly on the app and that it generally has so many features.

It does not hammer into things, but senses it is close to things, and then it just touches them. Before changing direction, or driving down the foot panel.

The vacuum cleaner is super efficient and powerful. It sucks with a full 2000 Pa, which is a lot. Not like a regular vacuum cleaner, but enough for it to take the loose dust, hair and gravel that will now get on a floor in a matter of days.

Then there is the mopping feature, which Roborock is shown to be some of the only ones to have. It is awesome and you can even control how much water to use on this model and even make the adjustment by room.

The price.

The Roborock S5 Max is relatively new and can be purchased for small 4000 DKK in Denmark. The prices are quite similar on this model. It's on the little expensive end, but you really get quality and functionality for the money.

The overall assessment.

Although it is a little expensive vacuum cleaner, it can really help people in everyday life. It can vacuum the floor as often as you like, and do it when you are not home. Then it can mop the floor where it is needed, so that you just get rid of the worst dirt stuck on the floor, and not least that you remove the last micro-dust the machine may not get sucked up.

I am very pleasantly surprised by this vacuum cleaner and compare it with others in the same price range and animals. Then I can't give it anything but a nice GOLD star rating.
